Chasing Windmills – Learning Spanish in the Land of Don Quixote

learning Spanish in Malega

In the summer of 2005, spent 10-weeks learning Spanish in Malaga at a school near the beach. It was also the 400th anniversary of “Don Quixote”. And took some side trips to Granada and Morocco. What better way to learn Spanish.

Prologue

What better way to celebrate the 400th anniversary of “Don Quixote” than to read it in Spanish. We need to speak other languages so that we may open ourselves to new cultures, thoughts, and ideas.

learning Spanish

Total immersion seemed to be my best option to learn a language like Spanish. I spent the first week studying at Aula sin Fronteras in Almansa, then headed to Málaga to study for 10 more weeks at ¡Málaga Sí! this summer. I went from the small town in the central plains to the huge tourist city of Málaga on the Mediterranean coast.

My teacher and fellow students

I was in class half the day only talking Spanish. And, like Don Quixote battling his windmills, I too struggled at times. Sometimes it was the heat, and sometimes it was trouble of my own making. But I met such wonderful people. There were Spaniards of course. And many students were from Sweden, Scotland, England, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic. Another amazing international adventure. And when I wasn’t in class, I spent time exploring the city and taking a few side trips to Morocco and Granada. And last, I visited friends in Madrid before flying home.
